An "I'm Not Dead" Post
Really, I'm not -- just traveling for work, and really really busy, even more busy than usual!
So a few random items for you:
Kay sent this dress made from junk mail, very cool:

Also, I recently sent all my scraps away to have a quilt made (pictures soon, it is AWESOME), but I'm building them up again at a good clip, and when I have another bunch I'm planning to send them to a new quilting club in Corona, CA. Their goal is to make several quilts a month to be donated to charity. Their first projects are going to Quilts for Valor for wounded soldiers, but they will also be providing quilts for community health groups Corona, foster children, and the elderly. If you want to send your scraps as well, they can use any cotton, silk, velvet, or denim scraps of any size. Most of their quilts will be twin to lap size. (Don't forget that you can pack a flat rate box or envelope with as much as possible ...) They asked me to let you know that you can send your scraps to Jane Ellen Smith, 3192 Via Mazatlan, Corona, CA 92882
There was something else, which I can't remember, but while I'm trying to think of it, you could do a LOT worse than go read La Bastiole. She lives in France! She's really funny! She has twin teenage girls! She writes about roadkill, olive oil, and how to take your driver's license exam in French ... anyway, you will enjoy it. I promise.

Thank you so much! I have been desperate for something to do with my scrap fabric, but have no friends who are quilters. Giving the scraps to charity is an even better plan.

Okay I love the dress. No idea where I would wear it to, but I would.

Completely unrelated to your post, sorry - although I do love the idea of sending off one's scraps to have a quilt sewn up. Not sure there's anyone who does that here in the UK; would love to hear if there is. So, anyway -- today in the UK the 1911 census was published. I'm really excited to discover that our house (built in 1907, so still very new in 1911) was lived in by a 'Tailor's Cutter' and his family. Having discovered a passion for sewing since moving here (had the machine when I arrived, but the out-of-control collection of fabric and patterns has developed since...), somehow I feel it's the spirit of the past living on (especially as I'd just finished watching a programme about Savile Row tailors on the BBC and stated how much more interested I was in tailoring than fashion itself -- cue spooky music...). I know it's only a coincidence, but a very satisfying one nevertheless.

Thanks Erin for that address in Corona. I posted a part of your post on my blog with the info about the scraps. Also your blog site so people can read the rest... and then probably get hooked on reading your blog like I have. Good way to start the new year... by helping out others!

Neat-o! Maybe it will become like Beatrix Potter's The Tailor of Gloucester, and little mice or spirits will sew together all your cut out pattern pieces with tiny stitches, as you toss in bed mumbling "No more twist! No more twist!"

Those pesky mice... I just wish they'd put my scissors and tape measure back where they found them so that I don't have to spend the next day hunting around for them like I always do...

Maybe you can make them little socks or something, so they don't track dirt on the fabric while they're working. Or would they be insulted, and go on strike? Be sure to leave out (non-sticky) snacks so they invite friends, and don't have to put down their work to go foraging for food.

since i've seen the generosity of the DAD readers, i thought of another wonderful idea for materials you may not use, or fabric that you loved when you bought it but hate now, it is the Ugly Quilts project:
http://www.reese.org/sharon/uglyqult.htm
where fabric and scraps are made into sleeping bags and quilts for the homeless. some cities have branches where people meet to actually put them together. i've donated old materials, old flannel sheets and comforters and scraps of material.

Wow, thank you ladies for any scraps you might send. We will use them wisely and lovingly. One of the ladies in our group has a long arm quilter and will be sandwiching the tops together. The rest of us will be piecing quilt tops as rapidly as our machines can sew. I can't wait to open your packages and plan our next quilt.
And no, no fabric is too ugly!
