What [were] you [wearing] New Year's Eve?

New Year's Eve is probably one of the few nights of the year where people really dress up. So, while you are all gulping coffee and having a morning after the night before, why don't you take a moment to comment and tell me what you were wearing yesterday? Don't be shy!

Me, I went out to dinner with Mr. Dress A Day (at Frontera Grill yum, plus: mariachis! Everything is better with mariachis!). I wore an ankle-length half-circle black silk skirt (yes, I know, not a dress, but the restaurant wasn't fancy enough -- or the night warm enough -- for my usual NYE dresses), a white tee, a pale gray cashmere cardigan, a double strand of choker-length Carolee pearls, a big new pink-and-silver Swatch, pale pink fishnets, my silver 1950s lunchbox handbag, and these shoes:

I topped the whole thing with my 1950s velvet clutch coat with the big collar. I'm really, really fond of those shoes; too bad I only feel justified wearing them once a year!

I dressed down a bit, just a slim black skirt with a kick-pleat, black knit shirt with crocheted trim and my winter boots with the fake fur trim.

A neat green suit my mom loved for years, and now I get. Long jacket (to the lower thighs) and a set of green shiny buttons on dark green ribbon stripes to close it.

White halter dress with orange polka dots and trim. I made it from a bunch of acetate that was left in Seattle by the Rolling Stones. It's my dress with the cool story.

I went retro-ish! Silver silk surplice top, black pencil skirt, chandelier earrings, heart-shaped necklace, retro ankle-strap heels but in a modern teal suede. And I curled my hair.

I would so love to have a fancy-schmancy New Year some year; but I generally watch the ball drop over the top of my ironing board, whilst wearing my most comfy flannel granny-jammies (complete w/eyelet ruffled yoke).But I love the silver shoes! Very Ginger Rogers/dancy-dancy! And they even look comfy, too.

For the eve itself, on which I merely went out to dinner with my mom and then spent most of the evening fixing her computer, I wore gray wool cuffed trousers and a pink silk sleeveless top covered with translucent paillettes and bugle beads. Black men's shoes, but nice ones, handed down from Mom. Slightly motheaten gray merino J. Crew cardigan. Forgot to wear jewelry, but didn't need it with all the glitz on the top.Today, for a party that was half my family's traditional New Year's Day party and half a wake for my dad, I wore a dress that I found yesterday at Burlington Coat Factory. Blurry snapshots here and here. It might not look like much in the pictures, but it looked adorable on, and I got many, many compliments. Wore it with a necklace and earrings that look like red currants, black Kenneth Cole heels, and, when the house finally cooled down, a tiny black cashmere sweater wth big mother-of-pearl buttons that my mother probably got in the sixties and that I managed to steal sometime in the nineties.

I was sleeping in my clothes (black Kepler's T-shirt, underpants) on the Coast Starlight, a.k.a. The Train From Hell.

Let's see...I ended up at a not-terribly-dressy party, so I wore black heeled boots, dark blue trouser-style jeans, and a black silk Nicole Miller top with a fitted bodice and draped neckline and shoulder straps that were thin where they attached to the top, and thick at the top of the shoulders (if that makes any sense). I love that top, but I need to fix it so the straps don't keep falling off!

I have a theme every year (well, I have a them for the outfit nearly every time I go out). Last year I went very Holly Golightly, and this year was the antithesis of that. I went bondage queen this year. What can I say, I'm an eclectic gal.

I was among the jammie patrol this year -- flannel, pink background, retro print.bbrug, nice dress! You can find some really nice things at the Burlington coat factory if you're willing to dig. (My fave aquisition: dark blue 1920's-influenced shift, with an overlayer of beaded-chiffon in an art-deco pattern. The best part? $19.99.Raven, that must have been some party!aka Madelene

Raven, wow! Does it take a lot of practice to walk in eight-inch platforms?Christine, why did the Rolling Stones have polka-dot acetate? Not that I'm all that surprised, but ... bbrug, so sorry to hear about your father.

The parties were pretty good. The first was the one we always go to, but this is the last year of it as the hosts are moving to Italy. Thother was a new one, and will possibly become our new tradition. I like to go all out for parties, especially NYE. This particular pair of platforms aren't tough to walk in, the heel-toe height difference isn't too great, like only two or three inches, and the platforms are solid. I just like them because they make me tall. Now dancing, on the other hand, took a while to get used to in them.

bbrug, count me among your dress-admirers. I have a love-hate relationship w/Burlington. Hate that our Burlington has big, dusty grey moths [ick] that will fly out at you unexpectedly if you dig through the deeper piles, particularly those near the walls. Hate that you can't return, only exchange: I'm too indecisive. Love that you can find fab, unique stuff for practically nothin' if you try often and long enough!

I wore a late '40s-early '50s vintage black dress with diagonal shirring/draping on the chest and a nice high waist. It has a nearly-off-the-shoulder neckline, and the skirt is a faux-wrap style with small draping sections off the waist. With that I wore these shoes (the picture doesn't represent them well - they are a BRIGHT teal with pretty gold accents and three different textures on the shoe) with nude stockings.

The weather was bad, so I stayed in - no reason not to dress up, though. I wore my latest Betsey Johnson acquisition - green paisley print, empire waist with green & gold ribbon trim & gold high-heeled sandals from the 70's. Unfortunately, I managed to get part of the fancy dinner I made on it, so I switched to black silk pajamas. Annie (aka "the librarian")

I've had a soft spot for Burlington since about ten years ago when, on my first time inside the store south of Market in San Francisco, I found a pair of shoes that I ended up wearing into the ground. They were very plain black Capezio lace-ups that my friend John dubbed "your Parisian lesbian shoes"; they looked elegant with everything and were soooo comfortable.Now I work around the corner from the one at 23rd Street in Manhattan, so I find myself in there every couple of weeks. Very dangerous. Fortunately, their dressing rooms are godawful, so I rarely find myself hesitating over something I'm not sure about. If a garment looks acceptable on me under that light in those mirrors, it has to look awesome under real-life conditions. Anything less just looks terrible.

One of my favorite outfits, thanks for asking! White satin corset, pale knee-length skirt with black mesh overlay, black knee high boots, and my favorite vintage beaded clutch. Then I proceeded to practically pop my corset as I ate too much. Happy New Year!

Like Shana above, I will wear a floaty silk low-cut tunic-y top with thin straps, multi-colored, over "rock star jeans" that have a cool embellishment, black heel boots, long black velvet gloves for a nice touch, and a velvet-trimmed vest over the top just for a playful touch and it helps cover up a bit. Small satin black clutch bag ~ so I am mixing a bit of the funky with the dressy, for a downtown Detroit party crowd!
