A Dress A Day

A dress.
Mostly every day.

Pockets, Good. Stalkers, Bad.

Rachel McAdams

I am told by the Rachel McAdams fansite I ganked this from that this picture is from the 2005 Hollywood Film Festival Awards Ceremony. Whatever. I'm posting this because it has pockets! Forget the silly little sparkly bag -- pockets! I have no idea who made this dress, and am disinclined to Google further, because I ran across this quote from Rachel McAdams while Googling, and it creeped me out:

The most romantic thing, a lovely boy bought me a dress once. He got my measurements, actually they were from The Notebook (2004) and I had them sitting somewhere, and he found them and bought me this dress, tailor-made, this beautiful little black cocktail dress. And I thought that was very, very classy.

First of all (and I know I've ranted about this before), "classy" is a self-negating adjective. You can't describe something AS "classy" and have it BE "classy." It don't work like that, boyo! Except possibly to say somebody is "one classy dame." That's about it.

This kind of verges on creepy for me. I mean, I can't tell if he was her boyfriend or not, but if he was NOT her boyfriend (as it seems) and he rummaged through her things for her measurements and had a dress made? That's not saying "I want you to be my girlfriend," that's saying "I want you to be my girlfriend DOLL." I dunno. What do y'all think? (And AL, if you're reading this -- yes, yes, I was creeped out when you gave me that custom-made shirt back in 1990. That's why I tried to give it back! Sorry.)

Well, it might depend on the dress. For me, a black dress just wouldn't cut it. But anybody who stalked me for more than two minutes would know that.

When it's just some random boyfriend, then, yeah, I agree that it's creepy. But OK, imagine if your husband did that. Suddenly not so creepy, right? At least for me that's how it works. Unless I hate the dress, in which case it goes back to being gross and wrong. --Rio

Note that it's not that I don't know what you mean about men who want a girlfriend DOLL. I've been treated like that. It's totally creepy. But a gift of a dress wouldn't be the first thing to set off that alarm for me.

I'm with you AND them up there: The right dress from the right person = awesome. Custom made dress from a stranger? Even just some guy you know? Creepy.

You want to know what's really funny? I saw this dress thought, Pockets!, and that you would probably like it. I think the print/fabric is divine.

This is so funny. No wonder men are so crazed about getting us presents. The right present from the right guy is perfect; the wrong present or the present from the wrong guy is just creepy. :-)

(Dear Husband, if you're reading this, I really want Dance Dance Revolution for the XBox for Christmas. Love, Me.)

I'll take her word for it that it wasn't inappropriate under the circumstances. If it wasn't creepily forward, then what's wrong here is "a lovely boy" -- oof. How condescending.

This dress was featured at Go Fug Yourself. Not up to their usual standards of fug; I wonder if they know about the stalker connection?

In defense of Go Fug Yourself, that was because of her hair, not the dress.

Well, she did say that the boy in question got her measurements from "The Notebook", so I think she meant that he got her measurements from the costume people of that movie.

the boy she is referring to may very well be ryan gosling, she is currently dating him....and he would obviously have access to the notebook's costume designers who would def. furnish him her measurements....since she says classy, i am inclined to believe it was no stranger who gifted her the dress.

I take it to mean she thought it was classy that he went through the whole process... not that the dress itself was classy. It (through her eyes) was classy that he took the time to get something made just for her, to fit her size, that he thought she would like.

    Anyway, love the pockets!
